I love the work of ViHart. Here is her site. (link) I love math and she shows its beauty in clear words and pictures. She is a Vivaldi of math to the modern world.
Like all very true things, there are parts that have great joy and parts that have sorrow. In particular, this post (link) has cut the deepest. At time of one minute she cuts down nearly all of high-school math courses in a single sentence. "Elementary Algebra is just fancy counting." It is true. She proves it.
Elementary algebra is one of the great tools for dulling the mind to the wonder that is mathematics. It is a poison pill to the minds of this generation. More bright people than I want to count have told me why that course convinced them that math was not for them.
While I cannot hope to be as eloquent as Vi, nor as technical, I hope to make a few posts about teaching how to think, how to ask questions, and how to find the wonder that is the language of absolute truth hidden in the world around us.
I have an adult-level book called "Experiments in Topology". (link) You could buy it for just over a dollar plus shipping. I hope to pull pieces out of it and use them to make simple exercises - places where kids can teach themselves something of the real math, while also learning something of the required math.
Because I am a science nerd and not a teacher, I humbly request your patience with my work.
